WHAT
This comprehensive two-day comics workshop, led by accomplished artist Dean Haspiel, takes participants through the complete process of comic book creation from concept to finished page. Beginning with an introduction to Dean's career and a series of timed self-portrait exercises demonstrating the art of visual reduction, students quickly advance to understanding comic layout fundamentals through practical script-to-panel translation. Day One focuses on character design and one-page script development for an original creation, while Day Two opens with Lynda Barry's collaborative Character Jam exercise before students transform their scripts into visual narratives—sketching layouts, receiving group feedback, and finalizing their comics with artwork and lettering.
Throughout the workshop, participants learn essential storytelling techniques, explore alternative narrative perspectives, and ultimately share their completed one-page comics, celebrating their new skills in visual storytelling and leaving with a finished creative product.
Class is limited to 10 students ages 10+.
